S/Sudan president, rebel chief due in Ethiopia for peace talks

 South Sudan’s president and rebel
leader Riek Machar are flying for face-to-face
peace talks in Ethiopia, a foreign ministry
spokesman said Tuesday, to try and end two weeks
of fighting feared to have left thousands dead.
“Both President Salva Kiir and Dr Riek Machar are
coming to Addis Ababa for talks, they are coming
now and should meet today,” Ethiopian foreign
ministry spokesman Dina Mufti told AFP.
The world’s youngest nation plunged into chaos on
December 15 when Kiir accused his former deputy
Machar of mounting a coup. Machar in turn has
accused the president of using a clash between
army units as a pretext to carry out a violent purge.
Regional leaders at the Inter-Governmental
Authority on Development (IGAD), an East African
grouping, have demanded Machar agree to a
ceasefire and hold face-to-face talks with Kiir by
Tuesday.
Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has warned
that Machar must comply with the ceasefire deal by
Tuesday or face action by regional nations. He said
if Machar does not respond “we shall have to go for
him,” without clarifying if his threat involved military
action.
Thousands of people are feared to have been killed
in over two weeks of fighting, pitching army units
loyal to President Salva Kiir against a loose alliance
of ethnic militia forces and mutinous army
commanders nominally headed by ex-vice
president Riek Machar.
Ethiopia’s announcement of peace talks between
the rivals came as rebel spokesman Moses Ruai
claimed to have recaptured the key town of Bor
after a pre-dawn assault on government forces.
“Bor is under our control… we are now in Bor town
now,” Ruai told AFP.
However, army spokesman Philip Aguer said that
fighting was still ongoing, and rejected the claim.
“There is still fighting in Bor, the fighting is not yet
finalised,” he said.
There have also been grim reports of massacres,
rapes and killings, prompting the African Union to
threaten “targeted sanctions” over the conflict.

Mourinho: Manchester City still title favourites

Chelsea manager Jose
Mourinho feels Manchester
City are still favourites for
the Premier League title
despite his side's win over
Liverpool .
Mourinho saw his team overcome Martin Skrtel's
third-minute opener at Stamford Bridge, as Eden
Hazard's curling strike and Samuel Eto'o's finish from
six yards secured all three points with a 2-1 victory.
Chelsea have now recorded four consecutive home
victories in the Premier League and head into 2014
just two points adrift of leaders Arsenal in third place,
but Mourinho believes second-placed City remain the
team to beat.
"I keep saying there is a big difference between
Manchester City and the other teams," he told
reporters. "It's not just about quality, other teams
have quality, us too. But [it is about] maturity, the
number of players, the group of strikers, physicality,
experience.
"They [City] are the favourites, for us, for Arsenal, for
Liverpool, to be around [the top] is a good
achievement. In our case it's important people learn
how to play these matches [against the top sides]."
Mourinho felt his side were good value for their
victory on Sunday and was particularly happy with the
way they bounced back from an early setback.
He added: "I think we deserved to win because they
did nothing to score the first goal, it was
circumstantial. After that our reaction in the first half
was a fantastic reaction. We scored, we could have
scored before.
"In the second half we defended well, they hit the post
with [Mamadou] Sakho, we had some counter-attack
situations where we could have killed the game. We
didn't and until the last minute it was hard, but we
deserved [to win]."
Mourinho also confirmed midfielder Frank Lampard is
set for a spell on the sidelines with a muscular injury,
but is hopeful the lateral ligament issue picked up by
Branislav Ivanovic is not serious.

Mascherano buoyed by Messi return

Javier Mascherano has
revealed his delight at the
impending return of Lionel
Messi for Barcelona.
The four-time Ballon d'Or winner is in the latter
stages of his recovery from a hamstring injury -
which he suffered in the 4-1 win over Real Betis on
November 11.
Messi is expected to feature in Barcelona's clash with
Elche on January 5 - the club's first game after the
international break - and Mascherano cannot wait to
line-up alongside his compatriot again.
He said: "I spoke to Leo during all his injury. I know
that he's very well, and that he has made a fantastic
recovery."
In his absence, the Blaugrana have reached the
knockout stages of the Champions League but have
seen their lead at the top of La Liga eroded, with
second-placed Atletico Madrid level with Barca on 46
points.
Messi will find out whether he has been successful in
his bid to add to his record haul of Ballon d'Or awards
when the winner of the prize is announced on January
13, with the 26-year-old on a three-man shortlist
alongside Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo and Bayern
Munich star Franck Ribery.

Ogun State multiple auto crashes

Four persons lost their lives while
several others were critically injured in two
separate accidents in Abeokuta, the Ogun State
capital and Ilaro in Yewa South Local Government
Area of the state.
The first accident, yesterday afternoon, involved
members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jammat, who
were returning to Abeokuta after their three-day
annual congress in Ilaro.
Vanguard gathered that one of the rear tyres of the
bus conveying members of the religious sect burst
while on high speed, which caused the driver to lose
control of the bus. The bus, it was gathered,
somersaulted three times, killing the driver on the
spot.
When our correspondent visited the state hospital in
Ijaye, where the injured were being treated, one of
the injured said the incident occurred shortly after
the vehicle had left Ibese.
At press time, the exact causality figure remained
uncertain, as the dead and the injured were still
being conveyed to the hospital.
Vanguard observed that officials of the hospitals hid
the identity of the victims from their relatives who
besieged the hospital to ascertain the state of health
of their loved ones.

Wenger rules out his move on Cabaye

Arsene Wenger is not
planning to renew his interest
in Newcastle midfielder
Yohan Cabaye during the January transfer window.
The France international, who played in the 1-0 defeat
to Arsenal at St James' Park on Sunday, was one of a
number of summer targets for the Gunners, who had
hoped to land the former Lille man in a £10 million
deal.
Newcastle boss Alan Pardew dismissed the offer as
"disrespectful" at the time and Wenger is not looking
to bolster his midfield options despite being in a
strong position to challenge for the Premier League
title.
"No, we don't look for midfielders," Wenger told Sky
Sports News. "Today we did not have [Mesut] Ozil,
we did not have [Aaron] Ramsey who stayed at home,
but we still had three good midfielders and I still had
Arteta on the bench.
"There is no real need in there."
Olivier Giroud scored the only goal of the game in a
victory which ensures Arsenal will end 2013 top of the
Premier League table.
But Goal understands the Gunners are looking for
competition for Giroud in January as Wenger chases a
first league title in a decade.

Platini vows to redefine football

Michel Platini believes Uefa's
foremost duty to football is to
implement policies that are
responsible, even if they are
not always popular.
The former Ballon d'Or winner is a staunch advocate
of Financial Fair Play, where failure of a club to spend
within its budget can lead to disqualification from
European competitions.
And while admitting his initiatives are not always well-
received, Platini has vowed to continue striving for a
more level and financially-inclusive playing field in
Europe.
"In recent months, football has not always projected
the best image of itself. Practices which are morally
reprehensible have persisted," he began in an
address over Uefa's website.
"Uefa has its share of responsibility. We would like to
act in a quicker and firmer manner. Nevertheless, we
have moved to the next level in 2013, and important
decisions have been taken.
"Clubs have been excluded from the Champions
League and Europa League, either for reasons related
to their financial mismanagement, or because of their
involvement in match-fixing.
"All of these measures are not making us popular.
That is patently clear. However, my aim is not to be
popular. My aim is to be responsible.
"I must take on this responsibility to remain hopeful
that another kind of football is possible. A football that
is free of cheating, violence or injustice."
On a lighter note, Platini took time to congratulate
Bayern Munich for a triumphant 2013, as well as
express his hopes one of Europe's representatives at
the 2014 World Cup would clinch the trophy.
"It would be remiss of me if I did not pay tribute to
Bayern Munich, who won all the competitions in which
the club has taken part in 2013, including the Club
World Cup in Morocco days ago," the Juventus and
France legend continued.
"We must also wish the best of luck to the 13 national
teams who will represent Europe at the World Cup in
Brazil.
"I have one single wish – that the Jules Rimet Trophy
remains in Europe for another four years."

Anelka faces 'race-hate' probe

Nicolas Anelka 's goal
celebration for West
Bromwich Albion in
Saturday's 3-3 draw at West Ham will be investigated
by the English Football Association.
The 34-year-old striker was alleged to have
performed a gesture recognised as laquenelle in
France, regarded by some as a reverse Nazi salute
and linked to anti-Semetism, after scoring the first of
his two goals.
Despite Anelka clarifying on Twitter that the
celebration "was just a special dedication to my
comedian friend Dieudonne", an FA spokesperson
confirmed the governing body will look into whether
the striker has a case to answer.
Dieudonne - real name M'Bala M'Bala - is French
comedian who has popularised usage of the gesture in
his acts and on the internet. He is a highly
controversial figure due to his extreme views, but he
has insisted that his trademark salute is not
performed to insult Jewish people.
The incident has provoked a furious reaction in
France with minister for sport Valerie Fourneyron
tweeting: "Anelka's gesture is a shocking provocation,
disgusting. There's no place for antisemitism and
incitement to hatred on the football field."
WBA boss Keith Downing insisted the significance of
Anelka's actions was being blown far out of
proportion.
"I'm aware of it but it has got nothing to do what is
being said," he told reporters after the match. "It is
dedicated to a French comedian he knows very, very
well. He uses it in his act and I think speculation can
be stopped now, it is absolute rubbish really.
"He [Anelka] is totally unaware of what the problems
were or the speculation that has been thrown around,
he is totally surprised by it."

Police foil atm robbery in Abeokuta

Po
Days after Ogun State Police Command rescued
the former head of the Anglican Communion Church
of Nigeria, Primate Peter Jasper Akinola, and his
daughter from kidnappers den, the command said it
foiled an automated teller machine (ATM) robbery
in Abeokuta.
The police public relations officer in the state,
Muyiwa Adejobi, in a statement, said policemen
operating an Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC)
posted to Rounder Point in Abeokuta North Local
Government Area of Ogun State received a call
from the security department of the Crescent
University Abeokuta that some armed men were
operating at the ATM Machine Room, property of a
new generation bank, located within the premises of
the institution around 1.30 a.m. yesterday.
“The policemen responded promptly and met five
university security guards on duty tied by the armed
men while the robbers escaped through the fence of
the school”, Adejobi said.
“However, the armed robbers could not have
access to the ATM Strong Room but damaged the
main security door to the ATM Room and tampered
with some gadgets therein.
“Their instruments for breaking the ATM machine,
including two cylinders containing methane gas,
two sledge hammers, pliers, screw drivers, lighters,
etc, were left behind because of police presence
and recovered by the police for further
investigation.
“One Abdulliahi Tunde,20yrs, a welder by
profession, has been arrested around the university
when he was making suspicious calls on phone
about 1: 10 pm while policemen on surveillance
were combing the bush around the school; and he
has been transferred to Special Anti Robbery Squad
for thorough investigation.
“The command therefore wishes to advise the
general public particularly those dealing with liquid
cash, like owners of cold rooms, petrol stations,
shopping malls etc to be more security conscious
during this Yuletide season and beyond as the
hoodlums have been barred from banks in Ogun
State by the police”.

Messi does not need Ballon d'Or to be the best, says Alba

Barcelona defender Jordi
Alba insists that Lionel Messi
remains the best in the
world, even if he does not win the 2013 Ballon d'Or.
The Blaugrana talisman and four-time winner of Fifa's
prestigious individual prize is seen as third favourite
by many to win the 2013 award, behind Real Madrid's
Cristiano Ronaldo and Bayern Munich's Franck
Ribery.
Alba, however, believes his team-mate should be
considered the finest player in the modern game
irrespective of who claims the prize in January.
"I don't know who will win the Ballon d'Or but I don't
care, Lionel is still the best in the world," the 24-
year-old told reporters.
Recent reports have surfaced suggesting the
Argentine is unhappy at Camp Nou due to differences
between the attacker and club director Javier Faus.
However, Alba dismissed speculation that Messi is
considering a move away, stating: "He is calm and
happy at Barcelona, and we hope to have him back
[from injury] soon."
The Catalans have struggled at times during the year
due to Messi's persistent absences through injury,
with his latest hamstring problem requiring him to
return to his native Argentina for treatment.
Alba, however, believes the team are still in the hunt
for silverware under coach Gerardo Martino.
"Maybe we have not been at our best, but we are still
first in the league, qualified top of our Champions
League group and progressed to the next round of the
Copa del Rey," he concluded.

Obasanjo, Jonathan, better than other Nigerian leaders

The end to the last long drawn-out university
teachers’ strike means that students are set to
return to school. On the basis of their experiences
during the strike, they are likely to once again, face
the reality of a wide gap between theory and
practice. In the area of mass communication for
instance, many students may have to grapple with
the real meaning and nature of communication.
Having learnt that written communication is
generally superior to other forms such as oral
communication and body language, they would not
easily comprehend why the choice of writing as a
channel of communication by former President
Olusegun Obasanjo (OBJ) with President Goodluck
Ebele Jonathan (GEJ) elicited so much anger from
some people. Did the many angry commentators
read Obj’s letter about which they made pedestrian
comments?
If so, did they come across the aspect where the
man said the letter in issue was not his first to GEJ?
Why then, is this particular one special-is it
because it was made public? Did OBJ not impute
that it was because the previous ones were not
responded to? Did those who argued that an
informal chat between the two leaders would have
been a better option not comprehend OBJ’s
allegation that access to oral communication had
become tedious? Again, why were people wasting
their energies on who leaked the letter- can a letter
whose author wanted to make his feelings public be
described as leaked? Even if OBJ’s motive was as
mischievous as his detractors would want the
public to believe, the letter was no doubt useful to
GEJ, his government and people of Nigeria. This is
because it articulated inaccuracies/half- truths,
false alarms, rumours, gossips, as well as publicly
held allegations into a package for more robust
handling. OBJ thus served as a channel to the
people’s leader to have first-hand knowledge of the
popular grapevine so as to nib public dissatisfaction
in the bud. Here, other national leaders fell below.
Another great leader that this season of letters has
thrown up is President GEJ himself. His reactions to
the former President’s letter repackaged him as a
humble leader. Many African leaders including OBJ
may not have been that tolerant. GEJ’s first reaction
was reportedly an order to his aides to say nothing
but to assure the nation that he would personally
respond appropriately which he has since done. He
in fact took time to explain the rational for joining
issues with OBJ. By his general demeanour, our
President with the awful powers at his disposal
behaved in line with an adage in my clime which
says a great leader is that man of colossal strength
who hardly fights. As usual, some people did not
see his response as good enough. Such critics
were not impressed with the argument that many
societal ills were created before the era of
Jonathan-they expected him to solve them so as to
justify the people’s confidence in him. They also felt
he should have frontally dealt with the issues of his
own time like the armoured car scandal.
Some other persons are however happy with the
response which they believed has turned the initial
tempo of fear and anxiety which followed OBJ’s
letter into mere national discourse. In particular,
people were relieved that the alleged political
watch-list was categorically refuted. As for the
electoral issues contained in the letter, many
Nigerians are wise enough on the basis of our
convoluted political system not to believe either the
allegation or the denial. In short, Nigerians have lost
nothing because letters were written and replied.
The letters have indeed not deprived written
communication of its value of being a qualitative
mode of transmission of messages. Unlike body
language which can easily be misread, written
communication gives room for opinions and
responses to be well considered and constructed.
Again, unlike oral communication which can easily
be subjected to several versions, written
communication is a permanent source of record
which is difficult to deny. For example, if the
controversial agreement on one term tenure
between the President and some governors was
written, the disputations on it would not have arisen.
Under certain circumstances however, written
communication is ill-advisable. They include the
writing of a letter to the blind or an illiterate person
or when a man wants to communicate with his wife
in their bedroom on a purely private matter that is
not of public interest. African culture probably
provides another example-abomination; where a
child chooses to publicly abuse his parent. But when
the subject is a matter of public interest, to write is
no harm. It is by far better than to act like many
statesmen in Nigeria who always play the ‘good
guy’ by doing nothing to upset the person who for
the time being is in power even if to so act does not
favour the nation. At the same time, some other
leaders who cautioned OBJ against letter writing
only sent a dangerous signal perhaps inadvertently
because what their caution suggests is that the
content of Obj’s letter is correct but it should not
have been sent through a letter.
It would have been a different ball game if those
who condemned the letter had said clearly that
having had the opportunity to discuss the issues
canvassed in the letter with the President, they
were sure OBJ’s letter was mere false alarm. Put in
question form, why did the leaders not controvert
OBJ instead of faulting mere methodology?
Amusingly, some other leaders took the former
President’s letter to be a case of the pot calling the
kettle black as if that means that the kettle is not
black.
In all, Obasanjo and Jonathan’s letters appear
better for democracy, because while silence which
creates vacuum destroys, information empowers.
So, people especially statesmen should learn to
speak-out on national issues which can keep the
nation in good stead all the time. If as the saying
goes: those who speak will die and those who do
not speak will also die, it means those who do not
speak before they die will die without speaking to
help humanity

Cavani talks up Real Madrid Friendly

Paris Saint-Germain striker
Edinson Cavani has talked up
his side’s friendly clash with
Real Madrid and says the
game will be an intriguing
spectacle despite there
being no points at stake.
The two clubs go head-to-head at the Khalifa Stadium
in Qatar on January 2 in a bid to retain a level of
match fitness during the respective winter breaks in
France and Spain.
And Cavani, who has scored 12 goals in his first 17
Ligue 1 games for PSG since joining from Napoli over
the summer, is relishing the prospect of facing
Madrid.
The 26-year-old told reporters: “Facing Real Madrid
is always something prestigious. Even if it’s a friendly
match and the result does not matter, this game is a
big one and a big picture. Hopefully, this should lead
to a good game.”
Les Parisiens have made a positive start to the
defence of their Ligue 1 crown and sit top of the
division heading into 2014 after taking 44 points from
their first 19 games.
Madrid, on the other hand, have endured a more
inconsistent start to the campaign under coach Carlo
Ancelotti – who of course left PSG for the Santiago
Bernabeu in June – and lie third in Liga, five points
adrift of joint leaders Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.

C. Ronaldo: " I like living under pressure"

The Real Madrid star is happy to shoulder the burden
of spearheading both his club and international teams
and is hoping to beat his 2013 goal tally next year.
Real Madrid forward
Cristiano Ronaldo says he
thrives under the pressure of
being a leader for both club
and country.
The 28-year-old has scored a total of 27 goals for
Carlo Ancelotti’s side this term, and led Portugal to
the World Cup with a brilliant hat-trick in the play-off
tie with Sweden.
However, the former Manchester United man says he
enjoys being a focal point for both of his teams.
“You have to be proud and focus on everything you
do. Sometimes I like living with pressure,” he is
quoted as saying by AS.
“It will not be easy to fulfil my goals, I know it will be
tough, but I’ll try. If you don’t try, you don’t reach
your goals.”
Ronaldo scored a total of 69 goals for club and
country in 2013 but is determined to try to beat his
tally next year.
“It’s always going to be tough and will to beat it as
ever.”
Portugal have been handed a tough looking World Cup
group alongside Germany, the USA and Ghana but
Ronaldo believes his nation could be a surprise
package.
“Portugal are not favourites and that gives us an
advantage.”

Fireworks injure 160 in Philippines

More than 160 people have been
injured by fireworks in the Philippines as they
prepared to welcome the New Year, the government
said Saturday.
A 14-year-old boy who lost his right hand and an
elderly man with a ruptured eyeball were among the
worst injured so far, Assistant Health Secretary Eric
Tayag said.
He tweeted that a five-year-old had also lost his
right index finger from using fireworks.
The Asian nation of 100 million people traditionally
greets the New Year by making noise in the belief it
will drive bad spirits away.
Households start stockpiling fireworks around
Christmas and start using them days before New
Year’s Eve.
Apart from fireworks, gun owners are another
seasonal hazard as they fire their weapons in the
air to celebrate Christmas and New Year.
Tayag said government hospitals had tallied 164
firework injuries in the runup to New Year’s Eve,
plus one case of a firecracker being swallowed.
“Active fireworks users (are) up by eight percent
this year compared to 2012,” he said, without giving
figures.
He said one person was also wounded by a stray
bullet.
Celebratory gunfire killed a four-year-old boy and
more than 400 others were injured by powerful
fireworks in the runup to 2013, according to police
and health department tallies

IMAGINE IF THE 3 WISE MEN HAD BEEN 3 WISE

Can't he buy her Range Sport?
Imagine Mary using 3310 my dear,

Gospel gist---- Marvin Sapp drops his new holiday album titled "Christmas Card"

RCA Inspiration gospel recording artist Marvin
Sapp’s new holiday album “Christmas Card, ” which
is in retail stores and online NOW, offers a unique
blend of contemporary music and traditional holiday
standards that set the tone for the season.
For popular music fans, the soulful lead single
“ Home for Christmas” featuring R&B crooner Joe is
reminiscent of classic contemporary holiday songs
by Donny Hathaway or The Whispers. However, for
those who love Christmas standards performed by
artists passionate to convey the reason for the
season , Sapp reunites with gospel super-group
Commissioned (Fred Hammond, Keith Staten,
Mitchell Jones, Karl Reid, Michael Williams and
Marcus Cole) on “What Child Is This? ” and “ Honor
The King“. The album also includes the title track
“ Christmas Card“, “ Feels Real Good “, “ Holy“, “ God
Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen “, “ Dance,” “Love At
Christmas , “ MaKaila’s Shout Out ,” “Thank You,”
“ Don’t Get It Twisted,” and “Joseph’s Song“.
”I’m excited about ‘Christmas Card’ for so many
reasons. This release marks two firsts in my
career – this is my first Christmas album as well as
the first time I’ve co-produced an album,” said
Sapp. “It was also great to team up with Joe, who
is an amazing R&B singer, and reunite with my
brothers from Commissioned. It is the first original
music recorded by Commissioned in twenty years.”
When asked about the various styles of music Sapp
had this to say, “We tried to do something that was
different. This is a departure from what people are
accustomed to hearing me do. I wanted to do
something this time that was not quite as churchy.
A little more urban and a little more ‘Boyz II Men
type or Brian McKnight .’ Still keeping the lyrical
content Christ centered was important to me and I
believe we succeeded.”
Sapp shared his personal holiday plans. “Our
tradition has been to fly to Orlando and spend
Christmas at Disney. This year the kids want to
stay home and bring their friends home for the
holiday. It looks like I’ll be having Christmas in the
cold this year! For Thanksgiving I always fry a
turkey because that’s all I know how to make!” It is
unclear what Sapp will be cooking for Christmas but
we know it will be good.
His charter school, Grand Rapids Ellington Academy
of Arts and Technology (G-R-E-A-A-T) is thriving
(now the home to over 400 students). “The children
are learning, excelling and growing,” according to
Sapp.
The Stellar Awards winning and Grammy nominated
artist dominated both contemporary and gospel
music charts with the 2007 smash hit single “ Never
Would Have Made It “, which held the #1 position at
radio for 43 weeks, maintaining the top spot longer
than any artist in Billboard’s history – including the
Beatles and Elvis Presley. Sapp went on to release
the chart-topping albums “Here I Am” and “I Win”.
What a picture of success. Sapp releases his first
ever Christmas project and it’s receiving rave
reviews around the country as he spreads his gift
with audiences. There is a strong family that loves
him, plans for a new Gospel CD in 2014, a
successful business venture with his charter school
and we know the best is yet to come.

JOKES -- crazy husband

A guy is walking on the beach
when he comes upon a golden
lantern half buried in the sand.
He picks it up and rubs it to get
the sand off and a Genie
appears and says: "Master I am
your Genie and I am here to
grant you three wishes, but I
must tell you, whatever you wish
for your wife will be given twice
as much." So the guy thinks a
second and says "What the
heck, OK, go ahead and grant
my three wishes." The Genie
says: "Your first wish Master?"
The guy says: "I want a mansion
built on that hill." The Genie
says: "Yes Master, and your wife
will get two mansions." The guy
says: "Ahhh, ok go ahead."
Then Bam! That's done, he gets
one mansion, she gets two. The
Genie says "Your second wish
Master?" and the guy says "I
want $100,000,000 in the bank."
The Genie responds saying: "Ok
and your wife will get
$200,000,000." The guy agrees
and Bam! That's done! The
Genie then says: "Master, Your
third wish?" and the guy says: "I
want you to beat me half to
death!"

JUDEG faults Obasanjo's letter to Jonathan

A group, Jubilee Democratic Emancipation
Group of Nigeria, JUDEG, has warned that the
contents of the letter from former President, Chief
Olusegun Obasanjo, to President Goodluck
Jonathan was capable of disintegrating the country.
National Coordinator of the group, Dr. Dele Oluwatade, who spoke at the end of year meeting of
the association of Gospel Ministers for True
Leadership in Benin recently, said the letter will
either destroy Obasanjo or Jonathan.
He added that Obasanjo had no locus standi and
equity to point out problems to a sitting President,
since he had most of the problems while in office
and did nothing.
He said: “At his age, Chief Obasanjo is supposed to
be resting and he is supposed to keep quiet.

UNN alumni petition Jonathan over pro-chancellor's removal

Nsukka—The University of Nigeria Alumni
Association, UNAA, has petitioned President
Goodluck Jonathan, over the suspension of
Chairman of the Governing Council and Pro-
Chancellor, Dr. Emeka Enejere, from office, asking
him to institute a full scale investigation into the
activities of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Bartho Okolo.
Appeal to Jonathan
The association, in the petition signed by the
National President, Mr. Andrew Oru, also appealed
to President Jonathan to order the immediate
reinstatement of Dr. Enejere as Pro-Chancellor of
the university.
Oru recalled a plethora of cases where the vice
chancellor awarded contracts for projects in the
university without recourse to due process.
He said most of the contracts awarded by the VC
had yet to be completed, despite the fact that
almost one hundred percent payment had been
made to the contractors.
In one instance, he said though N46.703 million had
been paid for construction of the proposed
Umunkara Street (University Secondary School
Road, Nsukka, out of the N49.161 million for the
project, the job was yet to be completed six months
after it was to have been delivered in four weeks.
Minister accused
He accused the Supervising Minister of Education,
Mr. Nyesom Wike, of replacing the Pro-Chancellor
with his own lawyer in Rivers State, Mr. Emmanuel
Akara, SAN.
Oru alleged that the Pro-Chancellor’s problem
arose out of the report submitted to the Supervising
Minister of Education by the university’s Governing
Council which indicted the Vice Chancellor of
monumental corruption and profligacy.
The petition, dated December 20, 2013, read: “Your
Excellency, as you can easily discern from the
above initial narration, the action of a purported
suspension of the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of
Governing Council, without reason and on no
available legal authority by the Supervising
Minister, runs completely at variance with the
avowed adherence to your government’s due
process regime and laudable transformation
agenda.
Wike and his lawyer
“Further shock, the same Minister on December 19,
2013, announced the appointment of one Emmanuel
Akara, SAN, who is his own lawyer in Rivers State
to replace the Pro-Chancellor.
“We, as responsible major stakeholders and
apostles of zero tolerance for corruption in
whatever form, are unable to keep to the sidelines
and watch the decimation of our dreams as
epitomised in the great institution which we have
lived to cherish and protect.
“In the light of the above and all other collateral
circumstances, we here-in below examine this
volatile situation with all sense of responsibility in
the context of all extant rules, laws, norms of civility
and respect for the visitor.
“Without mincing words, it has practically been a
war situation for the number of years that the Vice
Chancellor, Prof. Bartho Okolo, has been in charge
of the university’s affairs. However, with vast
resources at his disposal and his readiness to act
with brute force of the military style, his challenges,
be they academic staff unions or students or even
the previous Governing Council, were simply not his
match.
“He simply plundered and roared and every lip
remained awed and sealed. It was simply a culture
of impunity and naked megalomania and profligacy.
Nemesis, however, came calling sometime in April
2013 when Your Excellency, as visitor, and a bona-
fide indigene of the academic environment, in
apparent pursuit of your famous trnsformation
agenda, appointed a well-groomed fresh Governing
Council under the captainship of Dr. Emeka Enejere
as Pro-Chancellor.
“This appointment, like all other appointments to
different offices within the universities of the
Federal Republic of Nigeria and in particular, in your
capacity as the visitor.
Call for Enejere’s reinstatement
“In the circumstances, we, hereby, respectfully call
for the reinstatement of Dr. Emeka Enejere as the
Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing
Council of the University of Nigeria, even though we
are aware, from enquiries, that he has not even
been officially informed of his purported removal as
required by law.
“Further, we, hereby, use this medium to invite your
intervention to cause the relevant security agencies
to institute a full blown investigation into this dark
stain placed on your administration’s posturing of
good governance and probity.
Want VC Okolo suspended
“Finally sir, we respectfully call for the immediate
suspension from office of the Vice Chancellor, Prof.
Bartho Okolo, to pave way for an undiluted and
unhindered investigation of the contents of the
‘offensive’ report of the Governing Council
submitted to the Supervising Minister of Education
by the purportedly removed Pro-Chancellor.

Rivers Speaker denies plot to impeach Amaechi

PORT HARCOURT—Factional Speaker of Rivers
State House of Assembly, RVHA, Evans Bipi, has
denied reports of plot by him to impeach the state
governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi.
Echoes of the planned impeachment became louder
this week, following media reports that the visit of
the First Lady, Dame Patience Goodluck Jonathan,
to the state, was to intensify the impeachment
process.
In a reaction in Port Harcourt, yesterday, Bipi said
he had no reason to instigate impeachment
procedingss against the governor.
He said: “What has the governor done that would
prompt me to plan his impeachment? The only thing
I want is for the governor to recognise me as the
duly elected Speaker of the House.
”If he recognises that, I will also recognise him as
my governor and both of us can continue to work
together to move the state to enviable heights.”
He explain that Dame Jonathan had the right to visit
her home state, adding that “it is a disservice to the
First Lady for anybody to associate her with
impeachment of the governor when in reality there
is nothing like that.”
Bipi, who leads the anti-Amaechi minority in the
House, further said he was yet to be served any
invitation by Police Command in Rivers State to sign
any undertaking to be of good conduct as the Pro-
Amaechi lawmakers had done.
He contended that it was important for the House
Speaker, Otelemaba Dan Amachree’s camp to sign
the peace agreement because “they are the real
trouble makers.
“Whenever they serve me, I will go with my group
and sign the papers for them. I have not been
served. Maybe the Police know those who are the
real trouble makers.”
On the court order barring him from parading
himself as Speaker, Bipi argued that the Ahoada
court from where the order was obtained, did not
have any jurisdiction over the Assembly, adding that
he had also not been served with the said order.
He hoped that when every security matter was
settled and the pro-Amaechi lawmakers were
ready to abide by the rules of the House, the House
would be reconvened.

Great Motherly love.

AWKA—Former Presidential Adviser to the President
on National Assembly Matters, Senator Joy Emodi,
has feted about 150 widows and motherless babies
in Anambra State, as part of her annual Christmas
celebration with the less privileged.
The event, which is implemented yearly by Joy
Emodi Foundation, JEF, saw the beneficiaries
receive food items, including bags of rice, noodles,
biscuits, toiletries, wrappers and cash to enable the
women start small scale businesses.
The beneficiaries were the Nigeria Red Cross
Motherless Babies Home and the Onitsha South
Local Government Motherless Babies Home, both in
the heart of Onitsha, as well as widows that were
drawn from all the local government areas that
make up Anambra North senatorial zone.
Emodi said she established the Foundation many
years ago to assist those who do not have people to
help them at this period of Christmas and promised
to continue with the programme.
She urged wealthy Nigerians to come to the aid of
the less privileged in the society, noting that
government alone cannot cater for their needs all
the time.
She said: “There are many people in Anambra State
who are richer than the government and such
people should always remember those who are in
need.
“These widows have nobody to take care of their
needs, especially at periods like Christmas and the
only way they can be made happy is through our
collective efforts by providing them with clothes,
food and means of sustaining themselves.”
One of the widows, Mrs. Gloria Offiah, commended
Emodi for coming to their aide every Christmas,
noting that since she began the programme many
years ago, they always looked forward to
celebrating the Christmas with her.
She also stated that the money given to her by the
senator had enabled her to meet her daily financial
needs through the small business she was able to
establish with the money she received from her two
years ago.

CAN declares Fasting And Prayer

LAGOS—UMBRELLA body of Christians in the
country, the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN,
has declared today a day of fasting and prayers
for the security of Nigeria as citizens prepare for
the new year. Making the declaration yesterday,
National President of CAN, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor
said the prayer had become necessary because it
was obvious certain forces were determined to
truncate the destiny of the nation.
The cleric explained that in the life of the nation,
there are evil forces raging and threatening the
corporate existence of Nigeria.
He urged Nigerians, irrespective of their religious or
ethnic differences to fast and pray for God to
destroy all those who are bent on truncating the
destiny of Nigeria.

Patrick Mathias wins MTN songstar competition

Patrick Mathias (aka Password) has emerged as
winner of the just-concluded MTN Songstar
competition. He went home with a Porsche Cayman
car, a record deal with ace producer Don Jazzy, a
smartphone, six months data and a chance to
perform.
Three other winners were presented with brand new
Kia Cerato cars.
The General Manager, Consumer Marketing, Kola
Oyeyemi, said; “ the concept is part of the culture of
MTN in building the entertainment industry in
Nigeria. MTN is adding value and developing the
entire industry so that both the artistes in the music
industry and the listeners benefit, which makes it a
win- win situation,” he said.
Oyeyemi said the initiative was designed to develop
raw talents especially those who have not been able
to break through in music, noting that the
telecommunications giant, MTN, will create a
platform to discover hidden talents and bring them
into the spotlight.
The widely acclaimed digital music competition
started three months ago nationwide.

Mandela's philosophy and Africa's under-development

By Princewill Alozie
Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela as a human being and as
a phenomenon was never static. He lived up to the
age of 95 years. He did not develop any particular
philosophy with the title: Mandelaism. We can distil
his political, economic, and social philosophy from
his speeches, political activities and behaviour. His
initial involvement in South African politics was
based on the non-violence principle. This stance
was changed to military intervention when he co-
founded the militant Umkhonto we Sizwe with the
South African Communist Party. He was eventually
tried and imprisoned for life, on treason charges.
After 27 years in prison, Mandela reverted to his
former non-violence political philosophy. We can
therefore say that Mandelaism encompasses:
Freedom, Forgiveness, and Reconciliation.
Considering the report that no fewer than 91 Heads
of State who attended Mandela’s burial on
December 15, it is important to remember that it
was the British Government in 1909, that passed
through her parliament The Act of Union. This Act of
Union handed over power to the whites in South
Africa, while at the same time did not protect the
owners of the land. Various White South African
leaders articulated the view: “It is our aim to make
South Africa, a white man’s country”. There was
then the Native Land Bill under which about 1 million
white South Africans will own over 90% of the land,
while about 7% is left for the more than 4 million
black populations who owned the land initially. The
very productive, fertile land was confiscated by the
white – ruled South African government. Despite
this unjust social order, the African National
Congress (ANC) as a political organization drew up
in 1955 the Freedom Charter. The Charter states
that “South Africa belongs to all who live in it, black
and white, and that no government can justly claim
authority unless it is based on the will of the
people”.
Chief Albert Lutuli canvassed for a better social
order through non-violent channels. He was
awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. The Non-violence
philosophy Mandela embraced had a knock by one
of the practitioners. Chief Albert Lutuli stated: “Who
will deny that 30 years of my life have been spent
knocking in vain, patiently, moderately and
modestly at a closed and barred door? What have
been the fruits of moderation? The past 30 years
have seen the greatest number of laws restricting
our rights and progress, until today we have
reached a stage where we have almost no rights at
all”. This statement was made in 1960.
Fundamentally, not much has changed, even after
the official end of apartheid policy.
Some tenets of Mandelaism could be drawn from
Mandela’s defence speech at the Rivonia trial in
1964. Again, the charge that Mandela betrayed his
revolutionary colleagues is not strictly correct at all
times. The four and half hours speech, as
summarized by Guy Arnold in his – AFRICA.
According to that summary, which has been
corroborated by other sources, Africans “want a
just share in the whole of South Africa; we want
security and a stake in society. Above all we want
equal political rights, because without them our
disabilities will be permanent”. What the Africans
now have is “equal political rights”. If the emphasis
had been on “equal economic rights”, then the
charge of betrayal could stand. The above summary
can fit in perfectly into the neo-liberal ideology that
helps Africa march backwards in all spheres. It was
this interpretation of the Freedom Charter that
Mandela referred to in his historic declaration:
“During my lifetime, I have dedicated myself to this
struggle of the African people. I have fought against
white domination, and I have fought against black
domination. I have cherished the ideal of a
democratic and free society in which all persons
live together in harmony and with equal
opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for
and to achieve. But if needs be it is an ideal for
which I am prepared to die”.
There are however, other interpretations of the
ANC’s Freedom Charter different from Mandelaism.
These include: “The People shall govern… the
national wealth of our country, the heritage of South
Africans, shall be restored to the people; the mineral
wealth beneath the soil, the Banks and monopoly
industry shall be transferred to the ownership of the
people as a whole; all other industry and trade shall
be controlled to assist the well-being of the people”.
It is widely reported that Mandela subscribed to the
tenets of the ANC Freedom Charter even before he
left the prison. That may well be so. There is need
for an explanation of how the iconic anti-apartheid
nationalist, who was prepared to pay the supreme
price for the attainment of the tenets of the Freedom
Charter will turn almost 360 degrees against the
wordings of the Freedom Charter.
It is very possible that the intense negotiation with
key ANC members, including Mandela before his
release from prison, after his release and before he
became the first black South African president, may
have contributed to this shift. The presence of
Thabo Mbeki, and Jacob Zuma were possible
factors. Mbeki spent quite some time in Britain
during the apartheid era, and drank deeply from the
neo-liberal ideology that helped Margaret Thatcher
dismantle the British economy and the economies
where Britain had influence.
During Mandela’s rule, he and his team agreed to
the independence of the Central Bank, and to the
ceding of the position of Finance Minister to the
person who held the position under the apartheid
regime. In essence, the economy was in the hands
of white apartheid disciples. The role of the big
corporations in South Africa continued as usual
without improvement for the masses. The
emergence of World Bank and International
Monetary Fund personnel as Central Bank and
Finance Minister in a country that has accepted to
implement all the dictates of the Washington
consensus is tragic for socio-economic well-being
of South Africa and for the entire developing world.
Nigeria for instance, has a Central Bank Governor
who is competing with the Finance Minister for the
mismanagement of the economy. The Central Bank
is autonomous and the World Bank functionary who
is the Finance and coordinating Minister is virtually
the political and economic head of government.
President Jonathan in this regard is unwittingly kept
aside from the effective leadership of Nigeria, while
CBN and Finance Ministry run the country according
to Washington consensus or according to the
Structural Adjustment Principles which include the
following: Fiscal discipline, reordering public
expenditure priorities, tax reform; liberalizing
interest rates; a competitive exchange rate; trade
liberalization; liberalization of inward foreign direct
investment; privatization; deregulation and property
rights.
The implementation of these policies also referred to
as neo-liberalism qualify to tag Nelson Mandela
anti-people when he was the President, despite
rhetoric’s that appear to make him look
progressive! His resentful attitude to Robert Mugabe
who is trying to teach white settlers and their
foreign supporters that independence without land
is meaningless. Mugabe had tried all the
recommendations of the Structural Adjustment
Programme with disastrous consequences for
Zimbabwe. He decided to change gear for the good
of the economy.
Direct and indirect sanctions against Zimbabwe
ruined the economy. When you mention Mugabe,
people quickly talk about his age and how long he
has been in power. People do not try to find out if
the imperialist sponsored possible alternatives are
what the country needs. What is more, attempts are
not made to find out the number of years and the
undemocratic style of governance that prevail
among friends of the owners of Structural
Adjustment Programme. Have a peep at the whole
of the Middle East in order to draw your conclusion.
In terms of anti-imperialist struggle, Robert Mugabe
stands very tall. Indigenous South Africans do not
own the land and no serious attempt has been
made to redress this anomaly.
The most damaging aspects of Mandelaism is the
stance on Reparation and the Jubilee Debt
Movement. The Jubilee anti-debt movement was
canvassing for the cancellation, of the huge debt
South Africa is assumed to owe. These debts are
obviously odious. Some victims of apartheid filed
lawsuits in New York against some corporations,
and demanding reparation for the iniquities of
apartheid. Both Mandela and Thabo Mbeki opposed
the suits on the grounds that South Africa has its
own reconciliation outfit; and that such suits and
demand for reparation will frighten foreign
investors. What is further puzzling is that the
departing white rulers ensured that there is what
Naomi Klein in THE SHOCK DOCTRINE called
“reparation in reverse”. Patrick Bond’s Looting
Africa will enable readers have continental outlook
of what is happening to Africa, while Naomi Klein’s
book touched many countries of the world.
Mandelaism as a philosophy of development and
governance incorporates as Freedom, Forgiveness
and Reconciliation.

Keep looking up, Mourinho tells Chelsea

LONDON (AFP) – Jose Mourinho has urged Chelsea
to “enjoy the moment” and make sure they
overtake at least one of their Premier League title
rivals in Thursday’s traditional Boxing Day fixtures.
Swansea City are the visitors to Stamford Bridge on
a day that also sees leaders Liverpool travel to
Manchester City, who are in third place.
Just two points separate the top five, with Arsenal
second, Chelsea fourth and Everton fifth.
“The best way to get the first objective, which is top
four and Champions League (qualification), is to be
close in the title race, so let’s enjoy the moment,”
Mourinho said.
“I know Swansea are a good team with good
players and a certain style of play, but we are two
points behind and two title contenders are playing
each other. It is important for us to win.”
Chelsea drew 0-0 at Arsenal on Monday, the day
after Swansea had been beaten 2-1 at home by
Everton.
“It is a bit more difficult for us because we played
on Monday and our opponents played on Sunday, so
they had one more day to rest — and one more day
is a lot,” Mourinho added.
“But I hope Stamford Bridge is there for us. When I
say Stamford Bridge I mean Stamford Bridge with
noise, because last Boxing Day Chelsea were 11
points behind the leaders — Chelsea were out of the
title race — and we are there now.
“We are two points behind both leaders, so we have
reasons to keep going.”
Mourinho has not tasted a traditional English festive
period of hectic fixture scheduling since 2006,
having enjoyed winter breaks in Italy and Spain
since then while in charge of Inter Milan and Real
Madrid.
“I love it,” he said. “I don’t play, of course, so for the
players it is more difficult than it is for me, but I
always feel very proud to be working on Boxing Day
and giving the people what they want.
“My wife and my kids, they are fantastic. They
understand completely that I love to do it. They are
in England, they are not with the Portuguese family.
“They miss their family, but they know that I have to
do it and I am very happy to do it.”
Swansea’s hopes of recording a first victory in six
Premier League games have been hit by the loss of
forward Michu for six weeks.
The Spain international requires surgery on an ankle
problem and the blow comes shortly after winger
Nathan Dyer suffered a serious ankle injury at
Norwich City.
“It’s not good news,” said manager Michael
Laudrup.
“Unfortunately he will need an operation. It can be
done in the next week and he should be back
playing in around a month and a half.”
The growing injury problems mean Laudrup is
reconsidering his approach to the January transfer
window.
“What has happened in the last couple of weeks
has changed things,” the Dane admitted.
“We will probably do something now in January and
try to add something that we don’t have in certain
positions. The numbers are a bit down and that is
risky for the last four months of the season.”
Ben Davies, the Swansea left-back, has been
rewarded for his impressive form with a contract
extension that will keep him at the club until 2017.
The 20-year-old said: “It wasn’t a difficult decision
and it’s always great to sign a new deal and commit
my future to the club.

No plans to stagger 2015 elections -- INEC

Lagos – Dr Adekunle Ogunmola, the Resident
Electoral Commissioner of INEC, Lagos State, on
Wednesday, said the commission would not stagger
the 2015 general elections to avoid the problems
encountered in Anambra.
In an interview Ogunmola said that the problem
associated with that election was a blessing in
disguise.
The INEC boss was reacting to calls by some
sections of the society to stagger the 2015
elections.
“We are not staggering elections in 2015; having
problems in Anambra does not mean that we will
not be able to handle the 36 states of the federation
plus the FCT.
“In fact, it is going to be a lot easier for us. But, I
want to say that I see the problem associated with
Anambra election as a blessing in disguise because
we were thinking that it was going to be error-proof.
“And that would have made us to be a little bit
complacent, thinking that everything is okay.
“We see this as an eye opener and it has compelled
us to crosscheck our crossed T’s and dotted I’s
again.
“Beyond that, we need to also point out that there is
the problem of the people, who constitute electorate,
being nonchalant about checking their names during
display.’’
On voter register, Ogunmola said that the
commission had commenced de-duplication of
double registrants ahead of 2015.
He disclosed that the number of registered voters in
Lagos would drop.
“The figure for Lagos is going to drop because
double registration will be removed and when we
display, people will now be able to see whether their
names are still there or not,’’ he said.
Ogunmola gave the electorate the assurance that
continuous voter registration would afford them the
opportunity to register so that their data would be
recorded.
He said those who registered twice following the
commission’s own instructions to them would not
be penalised and would be given the opportunity of
registering normally so as to capture their full
details.
On voter apathy, the commissioner argued that it
would not solely be the responsibility of INEC to
remove apathy as witnessed in Anambra.
“The contestants and the parties are the ones
looking for votes, so they should also be involved in
mobilising people for election,’’ he said.
Ogunmola however gave the commission’s to do its
best noting that “most of the funds we demand for
election are spent on training and educating our
officers on how to enlighten the people’’.
“That is why I do not blame people that are
complaining about the amount INEC estimated for
2015 election because they have little knowledge
about its operations.’’ he said (NAN)

2014 Budget: Presidency Plans To Spend N2.3bn On Transport

A breakdown of the 2014 appropriation bill
submitted by President Goodluck Jonathan through
the Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala
has revealed that the presidency plans to spend at
least N2.3 billion on transportation next year.
The proposal is contained in the 2014 appropriation
bill submitted by President Goodluck Jonathan
through the Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-
Iweala, to the National Assembly last week
A breakdown of the figure showed that the State
House would require the sum of N1, 219, 612, 417
for what it called Local Travels. International
travels and transportation will gulp N1, 159, 240,
600 .
For the whole year, the Presidency intends to
spend N200 million for the provision of foodstuffs/
catering supplies while it also plans to expend
another N162,556,500 on meals and refreshments.
For honorarium and sitting allowances, the
Presidency has budgeted a princely sum of N320
million for that purpose just as it has set aside the
sum of N33.8 million for the office of the Vice-
President to take care of his foodstuffs and catering
supplies as well as meals and refreshments in the
year.
Under the arrangement, N23.8 million will go for
foodstuffs and catering supplies while the balance
of N10 million will be spent on meals and
refreshments in the office of the second in
command.
In the same vein, the Minister of Finance and Co-
ordinating Minister for the Economy, Dr. Ngozi
Okonjo-Iweala, is expected to spend the sum of
N568,859,940 on honorarium and another N51,
403,464 on meals and refreshments within the
fiscal period.
A scrutiny of the budget proposals however showed
that the Presidency shied away from making any
provision for the controversial Security and
Exchange Commission, SEC, whose head, Arunma
Oteh, has been embroiled in a ceaseless war with
the National Assembly.
The lawmakers had vowed not to approve any
budget for the commission until Oteh was removed
but President Jonathan ignored them and their
resolution.
In the same vein, the Federal Government made
the same yearly provision of N150 billion for the
National Assembly but did not give any breakdown
of the sum. It is not clear if the NASS would be in a
hurry to pass the budget given the furore that
attended the presentation of the document.
Controversy had mounted to the extent that
President Jonathan had to back out of the
presentation and later sent the Finance Minister to
represent him.

Christmas: Fun lovers troop to eateries, recreational centres.

Abuja – Eateries, hotels and recreational centres in
Abakaliki metropolis on Wednesday witnessed large
turnout of holiday makers seeking Christmas
relaxation and fun.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that
there was large number of people who came to
have fun and enjoy the Christmas public holiday in
some of the tourist centres visited.
At both the Fatilami and the Eunice Egwu
Amusement Parks respectively, hundreds of holiday
makers, including children, the old and young, were
seen enjoying themselves, as they engaged in some
recreational activities.
Some fun seekers at the parks said the Christmas
holiday had afforded them the opportunity to relax
and catch some fun.
Mr Fred Abana, who was seen relaxing at the
Fatilami Amusement Park, described the Christmas
season as an important period when people forget
their sorrows and stress and enjoy themselves.
He said “I came to the park with my three children
to relax and enjoy since we did not travel to the
hinterland for Christmas holiday. I consider it wise
to bring them here to celebrate with others who are
here.’’
Miss Joy Elom, Uzoma Eke and Agnes Ogwu, who
were also at the park, said they appreciated God for
the gift of Jesus Christ whose birth the whole
Christendom were celebrating.
Elom said “I have come to relax and have fun with
others here; for me, it is a great relief and I am
enjoying every bit of it. I thank God for the gift of
Jesus, whose birth we are celebrating and it is
unique.’’
A restaurant attendant at the Fatilami Amusement
Park, Miss Ijeoma Okogwu, said the occasion was
an opportunity to make huge sales.
‘`The influx of people into the park is an advantage
for us to make brisk sales; we are making high
sales this period.’’
NAN reports that Mr Biggs, Grace Court hotels and
Citiexotic Hotel also recorded high turnout, as
people celebrate with their loved ones.
Mr Lucky Chukwu, John Agom and Alphonsus Ibina,
at the Grace Court Hotels and Suite, said they came
to ease off tension and expressed gratitude to God
for sparing their lives to see another Christmas.
The Suntan Beach in Badagry, Lagos, also recorded
a large turnout as fun seekers trooped to celebrate
the Christmas.
A NAN correspondent who went round the beach
reports that it was filled with visitors from various
parts of the country.
Malam Lamorde Manaseh, a roast meat (suya)
seller, said he made N23,000 as at 2 p.m. and
expected to sell more before the close of the day.
“I wish everyday can be like this in Nigeria so that I
can make this kind of money every time. I have
made N23,000 already and I’m sure that I will still
make more because people are still coming to the
beach.’’
“The crowd is so much and this is very good
business for me.’’
Mrs Rebecca Atande, a soft drink seller, could not
hide her joy over the money she also made, as she
said “business has been great since morning and
I’m so glad about this because my drinks have
finished and I have to get another.’’
Miss Mojirola Balogun, a fun seeker, said she took
advantage of the holiday to catch fun at the beach
due to her busy schedule.
She said “I rarely have time to have fun due to the
nature of my job, so I use holidays like this to relax
and catch fun.’’
Mr Isaac Ken, the Officer in charge of Suntan
Beach, attributed the large turnout to the safety of
the beach and the patriotism of Nigerians. He said
the beach had not witnessed any mishap in the last
11 months.
“In the last 11 months, we have not witnessed any
drowning in this beach and this can be attributed to
the safety measures we put in place.
“The beach is very safe and this factor has
contributed to the large turnout of people because
they are assured of their safety.’’
In Abuja, however, there were few fun seekers at
some recreational areas when NAN visited.
At the Wonderland Amusement Park, there were
just a few holiday makers as at 11.a.m.
The Manager of the park, Mr Paul Oko, said the
development would improve as soon as Christians
returned from Church services.
He said “you know, most people are still in
Churches, many of the relaxation spots will come
alive as from 2 p.m. when many Christians must
have returned.’’
A visitor to the park, Mr Innocent Vincent, said the
low turnout of people could be due to the fact that
many residents travelled out of Abuja to celebrate
Christmas elsewhere.
At the Millennium Park in Abuja, the relaxation arena
witnessed few number of fun seekers in the early
hours of the day.
An official of the park who refused to reveal his
identity, however, expressed optimism that
business would pick up as the day went by. (NAN)

Taiwan Authorities Fine Apple Inc.

Taipei - Taiwanese authorities on Wednesday
slapped a fine of Tw$20 million on US tech
giant Apple for violating a fair trade law over
local iPhone pricing.
The Fair Trade Commission said an Apple unit
in charge of Taiwan sales had interfered in the
pricing and mobile phone payment rates of
three local telecom service providers, despite
selling them the distribution rights to the
phones.
It said investigations found that Chunghwa
Telecom, Far Eastone Telecommunication and
Taiwan Mobile had submitted their pricing
plans to Apple for approval or confirmation
before new models hit the market, while Apple
had also asked the Taiwanese companies to
change or adjust prices.
"Apple deprived the telecom operators of
liberty to decide on the prices based on their
own cost structures and competitive market
situation, to restrict competition ... and violate
the fair trade law," the commission said in a
statement, urging Apple to immediately stop its
illegal actions.
Apple, which can appeal the ruling, could face
an additional fine of up to Tw$50 million if it
fails to comply, the commission said.

Message from Jonathan to the Politicians.

President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday
admonished politicians and statesmen that were
heating up the polity saying that the country
belongs to all Nigerians.
The President was speaking at the Christmas day
service at the Cathedral Church of the Advent,
Anglican Communion, Gwarimpa, Abuja.
He said that the nation belonged to every Nigerian;,
"the common man, traditional rulers, religious
leaders, our men, our women."
Jonathan specifically cautioned the politicians
against making inflammatory statements that could
heat up the polity in the name of politics.
"For us at this time especially, we the politicians,
we think we own this country and begin to think
about next election and doing what we ought not to
do, making statement we ought not to make, writing
letters we suppose not to write.
"This country belongs to our statesmen, traditional
rulers, religious leaders, our men, our women, our
youth. Nigeria does not belong to any politician or
group of politicians.''
The president called on Nigerians to use the
occasion of the celebration of the birth of Jesus
Christ to pray for the country to overcome its
challenges, particularly, insecurity.
He noted that his administration had done
appreciably well in addressing the challenge of
terrorism.
"For those who know about terrorism, countries
that are infested with terror hardly get out of it."
He gave the example of the incidences in Abuja,
saying even the police headquarters was bombed
as well as the UN building right here in the seat of
government.
But for the proactive measure taken by the
government and our military, may be the next
target would have been the State House, Jonathan
lamented.
"So, we have to thank God that we have been able
to bring it to a reasonable level, though we are far
from getting there.
"There are a lot of challenges but we have to thank
God," he said.
Jonathan also reiterated that his style of leadership
was neither high handed nor dictatorial as expected
in some quarters.
Citing Biblical reference, the president said that the
Jews expected Jesus Christ as a saviour that
would liberate them even with violence, from the
Romans invasion.
"Whenever we go through the story of Christ and
leadership, it reminds you of the circumstances of
the Jew in the face of the political situation today.
"When Christ was born, the Jews were told that
God has giving them a King, a saviour, these are
the key words.
"The Jews were being dominated by the Romans, it
was like when we were under the colonial masters,
the Romans were governing them.
"So, when they said that there was born a king and
a Messiah, they were thinking they were getting
somebody who will come and lead them to war and
throw away all the Romans for them to be free.
"But when Christ was born, I believe a number of
the Jews were disappointed, the war they expected
was not his own style.
"So today, we have similar situation, the
expectations of the people are hardly met by
leaders," he said.
The president assured that his administration would
do its best to lead the country aright and to its
desired destination.
Earlier, in a sermon focused on Peace and Joy, the
Archbishop of Abuja, Most Rev. Nicholas Okoh, said
Christmas was a reminder of the Peace and Joy
that the birth of Jesus Christ brought to the world.
Okoh, who is also the Primate of the Church of
Nigeria, Anglican Communion, said that Jesus Christ
came to reconcile God with man and to take the
sins of mankind away and make the world a better
place.
According to him, enduring peace can only be found
in Jesus Christ, adding that "by nature, God is
peaceful.
Okoh urged Nigerians, especially Christians, to
embrace the lessons of Christmas, to be a source
of peace and joy to others
He added that it was in the interest of the country to
ensure that peace reigned as there was no other
country to go to.
The clergy urged Nigerians not to join anyone to
cause trouble that could lead to a situation of war.
Prayers were offered for the peace of the nation,
the president, his family and all Nigerians.
Those present at the Church service include, the
mother of the President, Madam Eunice, First lady,
Dame Patience, and Sen. Phillip Aduda, PDP-FCT.
The Ministers of Information, Labaran Maku, Police
Affairs, Caleb Olubolade and the Minister of State,
FCT, Mrs Jumoke Akinjide, service chiefs and
presidential aides were also at the service
