France said on Friday that comments by FIFA president Sepp Blatter that French pressure contributed to the controversial award of the 2022 World Cup to Qatar were ‘unfounded’.
“The allegations by the president of FIFA on alleged pressure by France at the time of the award of the 2022 World Cup are unfounded,” said a statement from the French Foreign Ministry spokesman Romain Nadal.
